Welcome to Textiles – a creative and ambitious subject that allows students to explore the exciting world of textile design. This hands-on qualification combines artistic expression with practical skills, enabling learners to develop their own unique style while understanding the techniques and processes used in the textile and fashion industries.
Through a series of projects, students will experiment with fabric manipulation, printmaking, embroidery, surface pattern design, and mixed media. They will learn how to take an idea from initial concept through to a finished textile piece, developing their skills in research, drawing, material exploration, and presentation.
The BTEC approach is coursework-based, allowing students to build a comprehensive portfolio that reflects their individual creativity and progress. Whether they’re interested in fashion, interior design, costume, or surface decoration, this course lays a strong foundation for further study or a future career in the creative industries.
Key Stage 3 Curriculum Intent
Year 9 – Building the Foundation (an option choice)
Year 9 plays a vital role in preparing students for the BTEC Art and Design (Textiles) course. During this year, students are introduced to key textile techniques and materials, while developing their creative thinking and practical skills. They explore a variety of processes such as fabric printing, hand stitching, surface embellishment, and mixed media. This foundation year encourages experimentation and builds confidence, helping students to understand how to research, develop ideas, and present their work effectively. By the end of Year 9, students are well-equipped to take on the more independent and focused projects of the BTEC course in Years 10 and 11.
Key Stage 4 Curriculum Intent
BTEC Art and Design (Textiles) – Years 10 & 11
BTEC Art and Design (Textiles) is an exciting and creative course offered to students in Years 10 and 11 who have a passion for design, fashion, and fabric-based artwork. This practical, coursework-based qualification gives students the opportunity to explore a wide range of textile techniques including printing, dyeing, embroidery, fabric manipulation, and surface decoration.
Throughout the course, students develop their creativity by responding to real-life design briefs, experimenting with materials, and producing original work. They will learn how to research artists and designers, develop their own ideas, and present their work professionally as part of a creative portfolio.
This course is perfect for students who enjoy hands-on learning and want to express themselves through art and design. It also provides a strong foundation for further study in art, design, fashion, or textiles at post-16 level, and can lead to exciting careers in the creative industries.
